The experiences and reflections of the senior students majoring in Chinese Studies at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University Hanoi, after studying the course "Chinese Language and Culture" with Professor Bi Geng (毕耕) – a lecturer from Huazhong Agricultural University, Wuhan, China.
In the second semester of the 2023-2024 academic year, seniors majoring in Chinese Studies at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (VNU-Hanoi) had the opportunity to study the course "Chinese Language and Culture" with Professor Bi Geng- an Associate Professor at the Institute of Culture and Literature, Huazhong Agricultural University in Wuhan. Professor Bi Geng introduced the class to a variety of topics related to Chinese culture, including the Chinese zodiac, numbers, colors, flowers, euphemisms, and homophones.

Over the course of 7 weeks, students delved deeply into various aspects of Chinese culture, from zodiac myths to the significance of numbers and colors, as well as subtle expressions in communication. Professor Bi skillfully combined theory with real-life examples and engaging stories, making the lessons lively and easy to understand. The lessons on homophones, such as the connection between "fish" (鱼) and "surplus" (余), not only helped students grasp the language but also allowed them to for compare those components with Vietnamese culture.

Although the classes were held online and occasionally faced technical issues with network connectivity, Professor Bi and co-instructor Ngoc Hoa were dedicated to providing the best learning environment for the students. The lessons were always interactive, filled with discussions and practical Chinese language exercises, which inspired students’ passion for learning and exploring Chinese culture.
The seniors are especially grateful to Professor Bi Geng for his enthusiastic and inspiring lectures. They expressed their gratitude through thank-you notes and a meaningful gift during their internship trip to Wuhan in July 2024. Through this course, students gained a deeper understanding of Chinese culture and were motivated to continue exploring and appreciating this rich cultural heritage in the future.
